General Information

We extend our warmest invitation to attend this year's meeting of Music Theory Midwest to be held May 16-17, 2008 at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. The program committee, chaired by Philip Stoecker (Oberlin College Conservatory), has selected an intriguing group of papers. Topics range from Renaissance Music and Sonata Theory to Serialism, Minimalism, and Harmony and Modality in Pop-rock Music. Sessions on Song, Opera, and Text-Music Relations examine vocal music topics, while sessions on Perception, Phenomenology, Philosophy; and Irony and Metaphor offer interpretive strategies. A session on Aural Skills Pedagogy rounds off the program.

Keynote Abstract

Our keynote speaker, John Covach, Professor of Music at the University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music, will speak on "When Things Just Don't Line Up: Textural Stratification in Rock Music."

Conference Events

There will be a conference dinner on Saturday night at a local restaurant, Cucina di Betto. On Friday evening, there will be a free pizza/drinks event for graduate students to get together with the keynote speaker.

Travel

By plane:
The closest commercial airport is Toledo Express airport (TOL), 40 minutes away. The Best Western Hotel offers shuttle service from this airport. It is generally less expensive to fly into the Detroit Metro airport (DTW), 70 minutes away, or Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE), 105 minutes away. Those flying to either of these two airports should count on renting a car and driving themselves to Bowling Green.

By car:
Bowling Green State University is located in Bowling Green, Ohio. By car, it is two and a half hours west of Cleveland, about one and a half hours south of Detroit and three hours north of Cincinnati. Interstate 75 borders the eastern edge of the campus; the University is located at Exit 181. U.S. Route 6 bypasses the south side of the city. Interstates 80 and 90 (the Ohio Turnpike) are only twenty minutes to the north; turnpike exit 64 provides the most direct route to the campus.

From the east or west via the Ohio Turnpike:
Use Exit 64 (Perrysburg). Follow I-75 South to Exit 181. Turn right onto Wooster Street.

From the north or south via Interstate 75:
Use Exit 181. Turn left onto Wooster Street.

From the east or west via U.S. Route 6:
Stay on U.S. 6. At the I-75 Interchange, follow I-75 north to the next exit (Exit 181).

Arriving on campus:
From Wooster Street turn north on Mercer; then turn left onto Merry. The Moore Musical Arts Building parking lot is the first one to your left, Marked Lot 16 and Lot C on the enclosed campus map, and the building is the one closest to the parking lot.

Park in Lot C by the Moore Musical Arts Building. Parking is free in this lot on Friday and Saturday.

Accommodations

A block of 50 hotel rooms are being held, 25 each at two locations, for May 15 -17 (Thursday -Saturday nights):

Falcon Plaza Best Western (419) 352-4671, single/double $69.95-79.95 plus tax per night, must be reserved by April 1.
Holiday Inn Express (419) 353-5500, single/double $99 plus tax per night, must be reserved by April 15.

The group name for both is Music Theory Midwest. The conference site is an easy walk from the Best Western; the Holiday Inn Express is not ideal for those without cars. The Best Western also offers shuttle service from the Toledo Express airport, for those flying in and not interested in renting a car. Detroit Metro Airport is just 70 minutes away and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport 105 minutes. There will be a conference dinner on Saturday night at a local restaurant, Cucina di Betto.
