Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, 16-17 May, 2003, 2003

General Information

It is a pleasure to invite you to this year’s meeting of Music Theory Midwest, to be held May 16-17 on the beautiful campus of Indiana University. The program includes a fascinating range of approaches to pedagogy, early music, and history of theory, as well as late Romantic and twentieth-century works and theory. John Buccheri’s keynote address, “Deep Learning in the Theory Classroom: Pacing, Bumping, and Waltzes ‘in Four’,” will close the conference proceedings.

Please send in your registration for MTMW 2003 as soon as possible. If you need additional information, please contact Robert Hatten, who is doing double duty as outgoing president and Local Arrangements coordinator. We look forward to seeing you there!

Conference Events

Bloomington Early Music Festival:

Friday, May 16th, 8pm
International Showcase: Les Flamboyants
From Belgium and Switzerland, musicians Michael Form, recorder, Rebeka Ruso, descant & bass viol, Dolores Costoyas, theorbo, and Dirk Borner, harpsichord, will delight festival audiences with a concert of French chamber music by Jacques-Martin Hotteterre, Jean-Henri D'Anglebert, and Marin Marais.

Saturday, May 17th, 8pm
Opera Opening Night: Piramo e Tisbe by Giovani Adolfo Hasse
English stage director Christopher Cowell and music director Stanley Ritchie will combine their creative forces in a production of, Giovani Adolfo Hasse's tragic intermezzo Piramo e Tisbe. Written in 1768 on a commission from a French lady for her small private theater, the drama follows the tradition of the intermezzo by including only three characters - Piramo, Tisbe and Tisbe's father - in a tragic plot drawn from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The fusion of light-hearted and tragic operatic styles was a highly unusual dramatic statement, as intermezzi were invariably comic. Tragic expression was usually reserved for opera seria. The fusion of the two styles allows for a deep psychological portrayal of the characters, and is accompanied by a musical score of surprising depth and substance.

For ticket information check the Bloomington Early Music Festival website.

The conference will be followed by our traditional Saturday evening dinner, at a cost of $17. We hope that you will be able to attend this event, which always promises good food, fellowship, and conversation.
