Conference Information

Thirteenth Annual Conference

University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, May 17-18, 2002, 2002

General Information

It is a pleasure to invite you to this year's meeting, to be held on the splendid campus of the University of Minnesota, overlooking the Mississipi River. The program committee, chaired by Eleanor Trawick, has selected a wide-ranging program from among a strong group of submissions. Topics include the expressive interpretation of late Romantic music, post-tonal musical languages, the analysis of improvisation, metatheory, drama and narrative, film music, music and environmental spaces, temporality and metrical dissonance, performance issues, motivic processes, and Schenkerian theory. Especially intriguing are the ways in which several papers combine two or more of these topics-a healthy integration of approaches that is as often intradisciplinary as interdisciplinary. The keynote address by Alexandra Pierce models this integration; she will share her career-long investigation into movement research as it has shaped her teaching of embodied analysis and meaningful performance.

Please make your reservations early. Our local arrangements chair, Michael Cherlin CHERL001@tc.umn.edu, has arranged a gracious reception and banquet, and you may also wish sample the rich cultural offerings in the Twin Cities in mid-May. As this year's president, I look forward to welcoming each of you, meeting those of you I don't already know, and hearing your ideas for future activities of the society.

-Robert Hatten, MTMW President

Keynote Abstract

The keynote address will be by Alexandra Pierce, Professor of Music and Movement at the University of Redlands in California. She will share her career-long investigation into movement research as it has shaped her teaching of embodied analysis and meaningful performance. She began her artistic career as a pianist, performing particularly in the Washington D.C. area. She has a B.Mus. in piano (University of Michigan) and an M.Mus. in piano (New England Conservatory), an M.A. in music literature (Harvard), and a Ph.D. in composition and theory (Brandeis). Her teaching (at M.I.T., Antioch College, and the University of Redlands) has been in composition, piano, and theory, with a simultaneous current of movement teaching.

She is the author of several books on music and movement, including Expressive Movement (Perseus,1989) and Generous Movement (Center of Balance Press, 1990). A prolific composer, she has written some 175 compositions, including works for symphony orchestra, string quartet, chorus, solo voice, piano, prepared piano, harp, woodwind, percussion, and various chamber ensembles. Sisra Publications (the name Arsis Press uses for ASCAP composers) has published her Set of Three for oboe and piano, her Psalm 100 for voice and piano, and two sacred choral works (Resurrection and The Road to Calvary). Other music is pubished by Media Press, Hildegard Music, and Seesaw Music and is recorded on the Zanga, Capriccio, and Vienna Modern Masters labels. She also is a founding member of Moving Voices, a repertory company which performs music and poetry.
