Keynote Abstract

The keynote address will be given by Professor Janet Schmalfeldt of Tufts University. Distinguished theorist, former President of the Society for Music Theory and Lawrence alumna, Professor Schmalfeldt will speak on "Performance, Analysis, and Schubert." A reception will follow the keynote address.

Janet Schmalfeldt, Associate Professor of Music at Tufts University (1995-). B.A. and B.Mus., Lawrence University, 1967, M.M.A., Piano Performance, Yale School of Music, 1970, Ph.D., Music Theory, Yale University, 1979. Author of Berg's Wozzeck: Harmonic Language and Dramatic Design, and of articles on the relation of analysis to performance, on Berg's Sonata, Op. 1, and on aspects of cadence, form, and voice leading in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century music. President, New England Conference of Music Theorists, 1993-95. President, Society for Music Theory, 1997-99.

Other special events include a reception following the keynote address on Friday evening, a banquet on Saturday evening, and an opportunity to attend a performance of Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem by the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra and the Lawrence Concert Choir.

Location

Conference registration will begin on Friday, May 19 at 8:00 a.m. in the Music-Drama Center Lobby (see the enclosed campus map). Conference sessions will be held in Harper Hall of the Music-Drama Center and in Room 156 of adjacent Shattuck Hall.

Conference Events

On Saturday, May 20 at 8:00 p.m. (immediately following the banquet), the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra, Lawrence Concert Choir, Lawrence Chorale, and White Heron Chorale, conducted by Bridget-Michaele Reischl, will present a performance of Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem in the Lawrence Memorial Chapel. A block of 60 seats has been set aside for conference participants, compliments of the Lawrence Conservatory. To reserve tickets, simply indicate your interest on the pre-registration form (limit of two tickets per registrant) and send the form by May 1. You will receive your tickets at the registration desk when you check in for the conference.

A buffet dinner is scheduled for Saturday, May 20, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the Barber Room of Downer Commons. The cost is $10.00. The buffet will include chicken oscar (charbroiled chicken breast topped with fresh asparagus and crab), pasta primavera, garlic roasted potatoes, broccoli with sesame seeds, mixed salad with pear vinaigrette, homemade dinner rolls, raspberry mousse in a dark chocolate shell, and coffee or tea. Please include payment for the dinner along with your pre-registration fee for the conference.

Travel

Most of the conference hotels are located in the restaurant and hotel district-about a 10-minute drive from Lawrence. Rental cars and taxicab service are readily available, and Lawrence will provide a free shuttle between campus and the hotel district.

During the conference, two Lawrence vans will provide complimentary shuttle service between campus and the hotel district, according to the following schedule. One shuttle will serve the Hampton Inn-Holiday Inn-Road Star hotels, the other will serve the Woodfield Suites-Baymont Inn-Best Western hotels. On return trips, the vans will depart from the turn-out in front of the Lawrence Chapel on College Ave. (*exception: on Saturday evening, the shuttle will depart from the parking lot adjacent to Downer Commons at the conclusion of the banquet-approximately 7:45 p.m.).

Visitor parking is free of charge at Lawrence and requires no special permit. Simply use the designated Visitor Parking areas shown on the following campus map: east of Physical Plant offices (#9), east of the Lawrence Memorial Chapel (#18), north of Wilson House (#21). Those staying in the guest houses on N. Park Ave. (#15, 16) may use the parking lot just to the south (northeast corner of Park and Washington). In addition, there is usually plenty of street parking (unmetered and without a time limit) in the residential area north of campus.
