General Information

Conference registration will begin Friday, 17 May, at 10:00 am in the lobby of Dalton Center on the campus of Western Michigan University. The opening session will convene at 10:30 am. The executive board, including area representatives and student representatives, will hold their meeting at 12:00 on Friday; newly elected officers and representatives are also invited to attend. The Friday afternoon session will be followed by a reception at Sprau Tower from 5:00-6:00 pm. At 8:00 pm Friday night there will be a concert of Norwegian folk and art music featuring the nine-stringed Harding fiddle. On Saturday, Henry Panion (Univ. of Alabama at Birmingham) will present the keynote address, "Legitimizing Pop Music," at 2:00 p.m. The business meeting of MTMW will be held at 5:00 p.m. after the paper sessions on Saturday afternoon and will be followed by an (optional) dinner gathering at the University Road House at 7:00 pm. The conference concludes at 12:00 on Sunday, 19 May. In honor of Arthur Komar, one of the founders of MTMW, a special award will be given for the best student paper at the meeting.

Keynote Abstract

Henry Panion III is presently Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he teaches courses in music technology and music theory. He has been commissioned to write for and record with such artists as The Winans, The Alabama Symphony Orchestra, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Quincy Jones, and Stevie Wonder, among others. This work has produced two Grammys, one Dove, and one Stellar Award. Dr. Panion has been musical director and conductor on Stevie Wonder's concert tours for the past three years, and has recently been appointed Musical Director and Conductor of the new Birmingham Metropolitan Orchestra. Dr. Panion's keynote address will explore the growing use of popular music in theory instruction.

Location

All sessions will be held in the Dalton Center (Building #82, located at D4 on Campus Map) on the campus of Western Michigan University. Parking during the day on Friday is available in Parking Structure II (#81, D5), just south of Dalton Center. The meters cost 50 cents/hour, or you may purchase (in advance) an all-day permit for $3. After 4:00 p.m. on Friday, free parking is available in open-lots in close proximity to Dalton Center. (Warning: If you park at the meters, you will still have to pay--even on the weekend.)

Concert information

You are invited to a dinner gathering at the University Roadhouse, 1332 W. Michigan Ave. at 7:00 pm Saturday evening, 18 May. In order to provide sufficient notice to the restaurant, we must receive your reservation and payment along with your conference registration form. The pre-paid prices for dinners include an entree, choice of soup or salad, beverage (soft drink, coffee, hot tea, iced tea), gratuity and tax. You may select one of the following dinners:

Broiled Superior Whitefish - Broiled in herb butter with diced tomatoes and scallions. Includes choice of potatoes, rice, fries, or chips. $15.

Chicken Picatta - Boneless breast of chicken tossed in seasoned flour, sauteed with lemon meats, capers, and shallots, in a white wine sauce. Served with wild rice and broccoli. $13.

Beefeater - Choice top sirloin steak, trimmed and char-grilled to temperature. Served with a burgandy wine sauce. Includes choice of potatoes, rice, fries, or chips. $12.

Vegetarian Stir-fry - Oriental vegetables stir-fried in a special sauce. Served over curried rice. $10.

An assortment of beers, wines, mixed drinks, appetizers, and desserts can be ordered and purchased separately at the time of the dinner.

Travel

Kalamazoo is accessible by plane, train, bus, and automobile (and maybe canoe).

Plane: Airlines servicing the Kalamazoo Airport include American, Delta, Northwest, and United. The airport is located near I-94 (exit 74) approximately 10 minutes from campus. Avis, Budget, Hertz, and National rental cars are available at the airport. Taxi cabs are also available (Airport Car Service, 388-7800; Yellow Cab, 345-0177).

Train: Kalamazoo is a one of the stops along Amtrak's Chicago-Detroit corridor. Call Amtrak, 1-800-872-7245.

Car: Kalamazoo is approximately three hours from either Chicago or Detroit on I-94. For customized maps and directions from your city consult MapQuest.

From the East or West

1. Take I-94 to US-131 north. (Exit 74)
(When coming from east resist all earlier Kalamazoo exits including the Oakland Drive Exit which is marked as a WMU exit.)
2. Take US-131 north to Stadium Drive east (Exit 36).
(This is marked as the WMU exit.)
3. Take Stadium Drive east to the 4th traffic signal, Howard Street.
4. Turn left on Howard, cross the railroad tracks and move into the far right lane as you proceed up Howard.
5. Take the first available right onto S. Vande Giessen.
6. You will immediately come to a stop sign on Western Avenue.
Turn left onto Western Avenue.
7. Take the first available right turn (Roell). You should be flanked by open parking lots on both sides. You may park here free after 4:00 pm on Friday.
8. Continue straight into cul-de-sac. Dalton Center is up the steps straight ahead. The entrance to Parking Structure II is on the left. You must park here if before 4:00 pm on Friday. The meters are 50cents/hour or you purchase an all-day pass in advance.
9. MTMW registration will take place in the Lobby entrance to Dalton Center (under the 3-story glass walls facing the reflection pool).


Directions from the North or South
1. Take US-131 to Stadium Drive east.
2. Follow steps 3-9 above.

Parking is available nearby at $3.00/day or $5.00/3 days. You may register by phone at (616) 387-4750 or mail in the enclosed Guest Reservations Form. (This must be mailed separately from your conference registration).

Accommodations

Blocks of rooms with special rates for MTMW participants have been reserved at three hotels located approximately two miles from campus. All three hotels are located near the intersection of US-131 and Stadium Drive (see enclosed map). When reserving a room use the designated Group ID# or indicate that you will be attending the Music Theory Midwest conference to obtain the special rate. These rates will be available only until the indicated expiration date or until all of the blocked rooms are taken, whichever comes first. Check-in after 2:00 p.m.
